Nearby lies Pico Duarte, the highest peak in all the Caribbean Islands, Taíno caves, in which the earliest inhabitants of the island have marked the symbols of their cosmology, and Santiago de los Caballeros, the second largest city in the nation (pop. ~ 600,000) where the blend of African, Spanish, and indigenous cultures have created a distinct metropolis area, and all is surrounded by an abundance of smaller natural, historical, and cultural sites. And if this is still not enough, we have plenty more adventures in which one can partake or create: whitewater and river kayaking, riverside horse and hiking trails to breathtaking waterfalls and natural springs, riding a motorbike to local villages, camping and backpacking trips, rappelling, and zip lines.
